Description

Overview: Arresting students as a first response instead of a last resort is a growing concern for many. Disciplinary problems such as disruptive behavior, disrespect for authority, and truancy are often being dealt with through the juvenile justice system which can negatively affect the academic engagement, school connectedness and future success of students. This training will present facts and statistics about ‘School to Prison Pipeline,’ investigate alternative solutions to common discipline issues, and demonstrate how change can make a difference in student success and school climate. The content knowledge presented in this training can be used by participants for universal lessons to help educate their community, staff and administrators working with disruptive youth.

School Safety Officers who have served as an SSP SSO for the past three school years (FY13 to FY 15) may count this academy as their training requirement for the 2015-2016 academic year.
All other School Safety Officers are invited to attend this academy, but it does not count toward their 2015-2016 training requirement. To meet that requirement, they will need to attend an additional LRE Academy.

Training Objectives:
  • Understand the benefits of the School Safety Program and the SRO
  • Provide content knowledge on the ‘School to Prison Pipeline’
  • Universal lesson content for community, staff and administrators on ‘School to Prison Pipeline’

Campus Issues Addressed:
  • Disruptive Behavior
  • Inappropriate use of the SSO
  • Negative School Climate

**Trainings are FREE for School Safety Officers. Scholarships are available on a limited basis for educators from a School Safety Site
